When navigational lights were added to the George Washington Bridge, this lighthouse was to be torn down. However, there was such a great public response to a children't book on the subject that the Coast Guard donated the building to NY Department of Parks. It has since been converted into a children's playground. (I didn't know all of that--it was in a guidebook that I got on the tour.)
